Truman’s Recipe for Losing Votes

President Truman’s tirade of epithets and Billingsgate designed to win votes for his party descended right to the edge of the cesspool on his New England tour, when he tried opening to bring racial and religious prejudice into the campaign.

All good, thoughtful Americans will recoil from this kind of campaigning in disgust.

His excuse was the McCarren law designed to regulate immigration to the country. It was written and drafted by members of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Party is responsible for any faults that may be found in it. [Internal Security Act of 1950, sponsored by Sen. Pat McCarran]

The party to which the President gives his allegiance is in power and responsible for this and other laws. Yet Mr. Truman had the effrontery to accuse Gen. Eisenhower of being guilty of faults with which he did not and could not have any least connection. [Dwight D. Eisenhower]

It was a blow below the belt.

As a matter of fact, Gen. Eisenhower has not supported or upheld the Democratic McCarran act, but holds that it must be rewritten to rid it of any injustices found in it.

The big fact is, however, that the President deliberately tried to indict a completely innocent person, then sought to convict and punish him. This is the evil kind of justice dealt out in Nazi and Communist courts. It has no place in America.
