One doesn’t know how to interpret the return of the Shah to Iran. Of course it is a betterment. Mossadegh was planning a tyranny. He was playing with the Tudeh group, which are Communists. Whatever he did after he took over the entire control of the country was contrary to its interests.

But what about the counter-revolution? Some think it was engineered by the British in the hope of settling their oil controversy. The Shah is pro-British. Some imagine that this involves civil war. A few insist that monarchy is doomed anyway and it is a pity to have the Shah back.

We note, however, the enthusiasm with which he was received. We cannot believe he is unpopular or that the Mossadegh autocracy had the support of the people. The Shah comes back with plaudits, with little opposing rancor, with a nationwide demand for the execution of Mossadegh as a traitor. Let us see what the next move will be on the Persian chess-board.
