New Complications in Iran

Aged and ailing, Premier Mohammed Mossadegh of Iran retains undiminished his power to create new crises in his troubled land or else to give new aspects to old crises. His demand that Shah Mohammed Riza Pahlevi surrender his governmental powers and “reign constitutionally” adds complications to an internal situation which grows constantly more desperate. [Mohammad Reza Pahlavi]

The fact that Iranians are able to survive is in itself remarkable. The national economy has been wrecked by the conflict with Britain over oil and political tensions have been heightened by the strange alliance of the fanatical Moslem extremist Mullah Kashani with the Shah and against Mossadegh. [Ayatollah Kashani]

In the face of this menacing situation, Premier Mossadegh pours oil on the flames by his affront to the Shah, whose hold on the popularity of the people was manifested strikingly recently when he proposed to leave the country. Even though the Kremlin now seems to be in a more benevolent mood, it must view events in Iran with satisfaction.
